Protection whilst cycling
A cyclist normally has very little protection from a vehicle in an accident on the road. For this reason it is important that as a cyclist you make sure that you are visible to all other road users. This doesn't just mean at night as 80% of cycling accidents happen in daylight.
- Wear bright clothing, a reflective jacket, armband or sash
- Wear a helmet, better to look stupid than be dead
- Ensure your bike is in good working order, check your brakes
- Use cycle routes and paths when possible
- Don’t jump red lights
- Don’t ride on the pavement unless it is a designated cycle path
Recently a new judgement has been ruled which may affect a cyclists compensation claim. Full compensation may not be paid to cyclists who are injured while failing to wear a helmet if it could have prevented their injuries. This is the result of a High Court ruling on the subject. If you are worried about this new ruling get in touch with our specialist cycling accident solicitors.

Case Study
A compensation payout worth £7,600 has been awarded to a cyclist who broke five ribs and dislocated his shoulder after riding over a pothole on the B4000 from Lambourne to Newbury in February 2006. West Berkshire Council has been found liable for the cyclist’s injuries by the county court.
The 49-year-old cyclist says
“the pothole was invisible as I approached it, but as I struck it the handlebars were ripped from my hands, causing me to crash. The accident has had a significant impact on my lifestyle. I'm still able to cycle but due to the pain I can't ride for long periods like I used to."
