A rear end collision occurs when a vehicle hits another in its rear, usually with the front of the vehicle. This normally happens when a vehicle suddenly brakes in front. If the accident takes place at speed on a motorway for example it can cause a multiple car pile up. A typical injury as a result of a rear end car accident is whiplash.

A rear end collision can be the equivalent of impacting into a wall but at half the speed. This means that if a rear end collision occurs at 30mph, it is the equivalent to impacting a wall at 15mph.

Damage is normally fairly equally shared between the two vehicles involved however the injuries to the impacted vehicle are often greater as they do not always anticipate the accident.

"A woman from Loscoe has received a five figure sum after she was injured in a car crash. She had to take two years off work after sustaining nerve damage in the accident. The accident happened when her Audi A3 was hit from behind while she was waiting for a child to cross the road in front of her. She said: 'The car was stationary and there were two cars ahead of me. Suddenly a Land Rover hit the car behind me and I was thrown forward. My right cheek and forehead hit the steering wheel and as I raised my head the car was hit again.' "

Case Study

"An Irish court has ordered EUR 21,000 in accident compensation to be paid to a 10 year old boy, who received whiplash injuries after his father's car was involved in a crash. The boy and his little brother were sitting in the back seat, being driven to school by their father when his car was hit from the rear by another car. The 10 year old suffered whiplash injuries in the accident and began to complain that he was having trouble focusing on the blackboard at school due to intermittent blurred vision. He was also complaining of headaches after the crash."
