Prevention of Whiplash

The most common cause of whiplash is from a car accident at high speeds however it can also occur from a low speed accident. It is important therefore that your car or vehicle is set correctly for minimal injury to your head, neck and back.

For maximum protection from whiplash injuries the top of your headrest should be inline with your eyes. Quite often the headrest is not set high enough. Other setting, such as correct tyre pressure can protect from a whiplash injury as it will give an improved grip on the road and braking and cornering will be improved.

The most common situation where whiplash occurs is during a rear end shunt or rear end collision. In this type of car accident the body is pushed forward and upwards and the head normally stays where it is. If the headrest is in correct position then the head won't be thrown backwards over the seat. If neck is restrained by seat belt also it will stretch neck forward. This movement and stretching of the neck is called hyperextension and hyperflexion.

You can also prevent a whiplash injury by driving safely. An astonishing 60% of people admit to tailgating when driving to or for work and 40% of those admit to it when driving for personal reasons also.
